Color and shape are pivotal when it comes to San Francisco based artist Haoyun Erin Zhao’s design process for her vivid and dynamic paintings and mural. With a special interest in learning and understanding the natural environment around us, Erin’s work is often associated with abstract forms from nature. In her current painting series, she assembles those forms to create strong compositions with vibrant colors and layered shapes. Stripes and wavy lines are often used to refer to mountain, rock formation and ocean waves. The process is quite meditative from designing and painting to masking, drawing, hand-cutting and repeating all the steps for the next layer.

Erin received a BFA from Academy of Art University. She is currently teaching at ArtWorks Fine Art Studio in San Francisco and working as art curator on the Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial Monument Project. Erin is a judge for Asian Pacific Fund’s annual visual art competition “Growing Up Asian in America Program” since 2016. The artist’s work has been published on International Artist Magazine and exhibited nationally in galleries, juried shows, museum exhibitions and invitational events. Her work can be found in public and private collections in the US and Asia.
